PM Surya Ghar Yojana & Solar Subsidy in Indore: Complete Guide for 2026

PM Surya Ghar Yojana

If your monthly electricity bill keeps going up, Rooftop Solar is one of the few things that can actually bring it down. The government also helps you pay for it. Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, homeowners can get a subsidy of up to ₹78,000 on a rooftop solar system.
This guide explains the subsidy amount, who can apply, which documents you need and how the process works, in simple words. If you live in Indore and want help at any stage, our team is one call away.

What Is PM Surya Ghar Yojana?

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a central government scheme launched in February 2024. Its aim is to help one crore households install rooftop solar by March 2027.
The idea is simple. You put solar panels on your roof, they make electricity during the day, and you use that instead of buying all of it from the grid. The government pays a part of the cost as a subsidy, so your own spending comes down.
One thing to understand early: “free electricity” does not mean your bill becomes zero for every home. How much you save depends on the size of your system and how many units your home uses each month.

PM Surya Ghar Solar Subsidy Amount

System sizeCentral subsidy
1 kW₹30,000
2 kW₹60,000
3 kW and above₹78,000 (maximum)

The government gives ₹30,000 for each of the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third kW. That is how a 3 kW system reaches ₹78,000.
After 3 kW, the subsidy does not go up. A 5 kW or 10 kW system still gets ₹78,000. So a bigger system makes sense only if your home really uses that much electricity.
Your final cost is easy to work out: system price minus subsidy. Prices differ by panel brand, inverter and roof structure, so always ask for a written quote before you decide.

2Log in and fill the rooftop solar application.
3Wait for approval from your electricity company (DISCOM).

5Once the installation is done, submit the details and apply for the net meter.
6Your DISCOM inspects the system and approves it.

How Long Does the Subsidy Take?

StageUsual time
Application approvalA few days to two weeks
InstallationA few days to two weeks, depending on system size
Net meter and inspectionAbout 15 to 30 days
Subsidy creditAbout 30 to 45 days after the system is approved
Note

Which Solar System Size Is Right for Your Home?

Monthly electricity useSuggested systemRoof space needed (approx.)
Up to 120 units1 kW100 sq ft
150 to 250 units2 kW200 sq ft
250 to 400 units3 kW300 sq ft
Above 400 units4 kW or more (subsidy stays ₹78,000)400 sq ft or more

As a rough guide, 1 kW of solar makes around 100 to 130 units a month. Shade, roof direction and dust can change this. That is why it is better to get your roof checked before choosing a size.

Net Metering: How You Save on Your Bill

A net meter records two things: the electricity you take from the grid, and the extra electricity your panels send back. At the end of the billing cycle, the two are adjusted, and you pay only for the difference.
On sunny days your panels often make more than your home uses. Without a net meter, that extra power is wasted. With one, it works in your favour. Net meter approval goes through your local electricity company, and it is a required step in the subsidy process.
